Bio

Susan Blake works in several media including painting, ceramics, and collage.  Blake’s ongoing interest in geometric pattern and color comes to the fore in her current painted ceramic works in which she uses the vessel form as a jumping off point for exploring notions of containment and transcendence. Although she welcomes that her vessel works call to mind a multiple of anthropological and art historical associations, she chooses to leave their meaning open to interpretation.

In Chicago, Blake has exhibited at The Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago, The Hyde Park Art Center, Columbia College A+D Gallery among others.  In Denver her work has been shown at RULE Gallery, Redline Contemporary Art Center, the Arvada Center, the Pattern Shop Studio and Hinterland Art Space among others.

Artist Statement: Painted Vessels

I unite painting with ceramics.  Instead of glazing my clay vessels, I paint them—using acrylic or enamel—with geometric patterns that are influenced by my interest in color and optical art or perceptual abstraction.  By subverting convention, my aim is to create tension between form and surface decoration. Whereas my patterns are systematic and precise, my pots are a bit wonky and shy away from symmetry—they are often saggy, reminding me of my aging body.

I see my work functioning as both painting and sculpture; nevertheless, I am concerned with craft and want my art to operate in a sweet spot on the margins of decorative art. I am interested in the concept of ‘vessel’ as both container and conveyance.  For me, my vessels represent feelings of containment, and, their rhythmic patterns suggest transcendence.  I think of my painted vessels as ‘personal artifacts’ that contain the sum of influences on my art as well as vehicles for recognizing and connecting to other cultures.
